Missions & Outreach

"And I heard the voice of the Lord saying, 'Whom shall I send,
and who will go for us?' Then I said, 'Here I am! Send me.'”

Isaiah 6:8

Saint Luke in Action

In a concerted effort to "Love God & Love Others," Saint Luke UMC strives to continuously answer the call to serve our community, state, nation, and world by participating in a variety of mission and outreach efforts.  In addition to our congregation producing or sponsoring individual missioners, our efforts throughout the year include the following vital ministries.

ARK Ministry

The ARK (Acts of Random Kindness) ministry has two trailers that go out into the community every Sunday afternoon to deliver food, warm clothes, water, and other priority items to our neighbors dealing with housing and food insecurities. The ARK serves nearly 200 meals each week and is always looking for cooks and drivers, as well as kitchen and delivery volunteers.

Blessed to Be a Blessing

Blessed  to Be a Blessing is a cold-weather clothing giveaway.  Coats and warm clothing from infant to adult sizes are collected, sorted, and stored throughout the year and  distributed by volunteers through our ARK ministry and the local school system.

BreadBasket

BreadBasket of Sanford is an organization that offers a free lunch to those in need, Monday- Friday, 11:00 AM-12:30 PM.  Saint Luke usually has two teams of volunteers serving at the Breadbasket,  each team volunteering once a month.  We are responsible for prepping the food, serving, and cleaning up after the meal.

Bread of Life Ministries

Saint Luke  helps provide meals at Bread of Life Ministries on our scheduled Saturdays at 11:00 AM. The food is donated, prepared, and served by our volunteers at an off-site location and some deliveries are made to homebound people.  This may be the only weekend meal some receive since other organizations may not serve every day. Volunteers and donators can sign up quarterly dates vary).

Christians United Outreach Center (CUOC)

CUOC is a Lee County organization supported by 65 local Lee County churches and many businesses. The mission is to provide basic needs of food, clothing, or spiritual guidance to residents of our community.  Saint Luke offers assistance to CUOC with volunteers, food collections, donations, and plastic bags.

Congregations for Children (C4C)

Congregations for Children is a ministry of the NC Conference of the United Methodist (NCCUMC) that pairs churches with schools in close proximity.  Saint Luke has been paired with J.R. Ingram Elementary School and West Lee Middle School to spiritually support faculty and students as a resource. Our support has included providing tutors for the students, goodies for the teachers, and social aid to guidance counselors.  We continue to consider ways to expand this ministry.

Disaster Relief

Saint Luke's disaster response has included deploying teams to help areas in Eastern NC impacted by hurricanes to recover and rebuild. We've also worked in conjunction with the NC Conference to coordinate teams in needed areas across the state.

Family Promise of Lee County

Family Promise and Saint Luke have been working together for many years.  In addition to hosting overnight stays and meals for families in the past, Saint Luke has continued to prepare and serve meals for families off-site on a regular rotational basis. It's one of many ways to promote keeping families together when facing a season of hardship. New volunteers are always welcome.

Highway to Healing

Highway to Healing is a volunteer organization to assist Lee County residents who have cancer, without means or family to provide transportation to treatments and doctor visits.  The group provides coordination between patients and drivers who will transport them to hospitals in Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill, Pinehurst, Fayetteville, and Sanford.  Saint Luke provides a list of volunteer drivers.

Joseph Ministry

Joseph Ministry is a hands-and-feet ministry that provides a way to serve within our church and the local community. This team works together to perform odd jobs, small building projects, maintenance, and home repairs where needs arise for those who need some assistance.

Meals on Wheels

Meals on Wheels is an important outreach in the City of Sanford which delivers hot meals to its clients. The meals are prepared by the Central Caroline Hospital kitchen staff every Monday of the year.  Saint Luke supports numerous teams which deliver during two non-consecutive months of the year.  The teams need to be available between 10:00 AM and 12:00 PM.  About eight volunteers are used every Monday for Meals on Wheels.

Red Cross Blood Drive

The American Red Cross utilizes our Saint Luke facilities to conduct blood drives once every two months, 1:30 PM-6:00 PM, which are co-sponsored by Saint Luke UMC and Trinity UMC.  Our volunteers work in conjunction with the Durham-based American Red Cross staff to provide donor registration and scheduling, to set up and break down the dedicated facility, and to provide snacks and beverages for donors. The blood drive donations help provide the medical demand for blood throughout the Durham region and volunteers are always welcome!

Red Bird Mission

A long-standing mission tradition for Saint Luke is sponsoring mission teams to southeastern Beverly, Kentucky through the Red Bird Mission. The organization strives to help rebuild and alleviate some of the critical issues in this isolated, rural distressed area.

Scouting

Saint Luke is honored to host a thriving Scouting program which serves our community in many admirable ways and which continues to produce Eagle Scouts, the highest recognition.
